Uninsured? Guidance for COVID-19 Testing

Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
 
Anyone with severe symptoms (difficulty breathing or shortness of breath; persistent pain or chest pressure; new confusion or inability to arouse; bluish lips or face) should call 911 and go to a hospital emergency department.
 
Anyone looking for specific medical advice regarding symptoms they may be experiencing should call his or her primary care provider.

People who are uninsured or who do not have a regular primary care provider should call a local health care facility. Some types of health care organizations are required to help people regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. These include:

• Community health centers
• Hospital-based urgent care clinic
• Hospital-based primary care practices
• Hospital emergency rooms

 
The test for COVID-19 is performed by Maine’s public health laboratory for free. In some cases, providers may charge people for the visit to be tested. Many hospitals and all community health centers in Maine offer free or low-cost care to patients based on their income.
 
Anyone uninsured in Maine is also encouraged to find out if they are eligible for coverage options including MaineCare, which provides comprehensive health coverage at low or no cost to enrollees. More information about MaineCare and other coverage options can be found at CoverME.gov/eligibility
