Old Orchard Beach/Saco - The deadline for two college scholarships for students in area high schools is almost here. The Future Entrepreneur Scholarship seeks to assist and empower the next generation of business owners and entrepreneurs through financial assistance. One $500 scholarship will be awarded to the graduating senior at Old Orchard Beach High School that plans to major in business, hospitality management, a trade, or related tourism field. Applications must be turned in by Friday April 8th. The Justin Chenette Spirit of Service Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from Thornton Academy that has demonstrated a passion for helping others, strong leadership skills, and has worked to improve the community outside of the school’s campus. This $500 scholarship has an application deadline of April 28th. Both scholarships are sponsored by the Saco Bay Center for Civic Engagement. Last year’s recipients were Rebecca Greelee of Old Orchard Beach, who is attending the University of Southern Maine, double majoring in marketing and entrepreneurship with a minor in accounting, and Christina Scenna of Saco who is at Saint Michael's College studying sociology. Applications can be found at sacobaycenter.org and must be turned into the guidance office at each respective high school.

AUGUSTA – Rep. Justin Chenette has co-sponsored a joint resolution recognizing April as Autism Awareness Month. “We could use a bit more compassion and empathy for other human beings in this world,” says Chenette. “Together we can support individuals on the autism spectrum and their families not just with resources, but change our often judgmental actions with one of inclusion and acceptance.” A nationwide awareness campaign for autism started in the 70’s and officially recognized by Congress in the 80’s. Below is the resolution that was passed today in the Maine House of Representatives. |
