Statement on recent mass shooting

6/12/2016

We will not be deterred from living our lives openly and honestly with the foundation of freedoms we have as Americans that millions of our brave men and women died to preserve.

The recent mass shooting in Orlando illustrates hate for our way of life. Hate for a people who believe in being able to marry the person we love. Hate for a people that empower each other rather than governing with an iron fist of fear. America doesn’t have to be great again, we are already great.

Ou
r way of life is a shining beacon of hope to so many. No terrorist, domestic or abroad, will intimidate us or threaten us from living our lives as we deem fit. This wasn’t just an attack on the LGBT community, it’s an attack on all of us.

This is a prime example of how homophobia, hate, fear, taken to the extreme, can be deadly. Mutual respect, love, tolerance, and acceptance are critical to moving past an outdated prism of viewing people who are different. Our differences make America what it is.

Our diversity is a strength not a weakness. Something, those who wish to bring us down, will never understand.

Old Orchard Beach – The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund has endorsed Justin Chenette for the Democratic nomination for State Senate for Old Orchard Beach, Saco, Hollis, Limington, and Part of Buxton.

The Victory Fund is the nation’s leading political organization supporting candidates who stand up for equality for the LGBT community and the rights of all.

In 2012, Chenette made history for becoming the nation’s youngest openly gay legislator at age 21.
The Advocate magazine named him “an architect of the next decade” and listed him among the 40 Under 40 most accomplished leaders throughout the country in 2013.

Most recently the Advocate named Chenette one of the top 7 out millennial politicians in the entire country shaking up the system along with Rep. Ryan  Fecteau of Biddeford.
Chenette has championed issues of equality from working to pass marriage equality at Equality Maine to speaking out against so-called religious freedom bills on the House floor that aimed to roll back the clock on LGBT rights.

“I recently got married to my partner Eduard and I have to tell you, our community’s support for being with the person I love has been phenomenal,” says Chenette. “It’s important to elect individuals not based on their personal lives, but based on their conviction of fighting for those without a voice and their values of setting a positive example for the next generation.”

This endorsement follows the string of endorsements for Chenette from the Sierra Club to the incumbent Sen. Linda Valentino.

The Democratic Primary is Tuesday June 14th.

Portland -- Sierra Club Maine has announced its endorsement of Rep. Justin Chenette,  Saco, for the District 31 in the Maine State Senate Primary race.

“The Sierra Club Maine endorses Justin Chenette for State Senate because he is an environmental champion," says Claudia King, Sierra Club Maine Political Chair. "Justin has fought to preserve our natural resources based economy, voting to protect our lakes, standing up for investments in renewable energy like solar power, and providing leadership on addressing climate change. He is the best candidate to protect our environment while helping to build a clean energy future for our state.”

The Sierra Club endorses candidates who have demonstrated their commitment to  the environment and who have potential to serve as strong leaders in Augusta.

“With so many vital issues facing Maine policy makers, the election of strong leaders has never has never been more important,” said Glen Brand, local chapter director. “We are 100% committed to securing a strong pro-environment majority in both the House and Senate for 2017-18.”
