Rep. Justin Chenette, D-Saco, a co-sponsor of LD 1279 and member of the State and Local Government Committee, spoke passionately in favor of the bill, arguing that having voters elect constitutional officers would promote transparency and be a more democratic, less partisan process than the current system. On the House floor, House Minority Leader Kenneth Fredette, R-Newport, called the current process in Maine “a relic.” Rep. Justin Chenette, D-Saco, said the process forces candidates to campaign in secret by hobnobbing with legislators. The Advocate, the nation's leading LGBT magazine, has named Rep. Justin Chenette to the their annual list of 40 Under 40 leaders that include other accomplished leaders in politics, sports, science, religion, and the arts.
