Sen. Chenette appointed to serve on national redistricting & elections committee

​AUGUSTA — Sen. Justin Chenette, D-Saco, has been appointed to serve on the National Conference of State Legislatures’ (NCSL) Redistricting and Elections Standing Committee by Sen. Pres. Troy Jackson, D-Allagash. The committee studies and advises on redistricting, election, and campaign finance laws across the country.
 
“Our democratic institutions have been under assault not only from political gerrymandering but also from election interference by foreign powers,” said Sen. Chenette. “This appointment is a reflection of my many years of advocacy in the Legislature to pass comprehensive democratic reforms, from strengthening ethics to expanding voting rights and access.”

The membership of the committee includes state legislators from across the United States, as well as staff from NCSL and staff from state legislatures. Rep. Janice Cooper, D-Yarmouth, and House Majority Leader Rep. Matt Moonen, D-Portland, also will serve on the committee.
 
The Redistricting and Elections Standing Committee communicates on behalf of all state legislatures to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Voting Section of the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. The committee also determines the priorities for NCSL staff who specialize in these areas and provides educational opportunities for legislators and legislative staff through meetings, webinars and visits.
