![]() State Sen. Justin Chenette of Saco has announced the details of of a Maine's three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for the state and region. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation projects throughout the state. "The public must have access to safe roads, bridges, and railways not just for ourselves, but for the foundation of future economic growth," Chenette said. "I hope that this outline of the department’s work over the next few years is helpful for local officials and the members of the public." According to the MDOT, the work plan includes more than $2.3 billion worth of construction and maintenance, of which $511.1 million is scheduled for 604 capital projects in 2018.
The three-year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 229 miles of highway construction; 1,128 miles of pavement preservation; 1,800 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 240 spot and safety improvements; and 260 bridge construction projects. Sen. Chenette stressed the importance of funding for the MDOT work plan and its investment in the region. The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for Saco, Old Orchard Beach, Hollis, Limington and Buxton in 2018: Bridge work Surface replacement at Saco I-195 Bridge over Industrial Park Road eastbound, Saco I-195 Bridge over Industrial Park Road westbound, Saco I-195 Bridge over Route 1 eastbound and Saco I-195 Bridge over Route 1 westbound. Custodial Maintenance Sealing bridges in Scarborough Crew area in Biddeford, Buxton and Saco to help preserve the longevity of the structures. Canopy clearing beginning at the junction of Route 112 and Route 4A in Buxton and extending northeast 9.81 miles to the Buxton-Gorham town line. Drainage Maintenance Repairs to a large culvert that will consist of curb and fascia repairs of the existing structure including updating the guard rail, located 0.20 of a mile west of Christian Hill Road in Limington. Highway work/light paving Construction/rehabilitation beginning at the Somesville Bridge in Saco and extending northwest 0.17 of a mile to Lincoln Street. Paving beginning at Route 5 in Saco and extending northeast 0.57 of a mile. Paving beginning at the Biddeford town line and extending north 0.63 of a mile to Elm Street in Saco. Paving beginning at Route 112 in Saco and extending northeast 1.79 miles. Paving beginning 0.02 of a mile east of the Buxton town line and extending northwest 2.15 miles to Route 202 in Saco. Safety and spot improvements at the intersection of Route 98 and Ross Road in Old Orchard Beach. Paving beginning at Shy Beaver Road in Hollis and extending east 1.16 miles. Paving beginning at Route 22 and extending south 2.40 miles, spanning Buxton and Scarborough. Safety and spot improvements at the intersection of Broadturn Road and Route 22 in Buxton.
