LAWMAKERS WORK TO GET YOUTH INVOLVED IN STATE LAWMAKING

WABI: High School students got a taste of policy-making at the Statehouse in Augusta today.

Maine’s Young Democrats and other groups set up Youth Advocacy Day, giving young people around the state a chance to talk with younger lawmakers and ask questions about getting involved.
The idea is to encourage younger people to engage in politics beyond elections and empowering them to make changes for their generation.

“We keep hearing that young people are leaving the state because they can’t find work, they can’t find jobs and opportunities and we’re wanting to say you know what? We can make it work, we can break down those barriers and I think Millennials in general are less partisan,” explains Representative Justin Chenette.  “They don’t see the D or the R they see this is the problem what’s the potential solution and were making it happen in Augusta.”

This was the first Youth Advocacy Day at the Statehouse.

Lawmakers are now planning on doing this every year.
